How does the PowerPlate ® work?


The initial concept was developed for Russian cosmonauts in the 1960s as a way to counteract the degeneration of bone and muscle in space. A Dutch Olympic strength coach adapted the concept for training in 1999, creating the Power Plate ®.

The Power Plate ® works by producing oscillating vibrations in three planes: sagittal (up and down) vertical and horizontal which in turn are delivered to your entire body. The body part nearest the platform receives the greatest amount of vibrations. For example, if you’re standing on it, the lower body will receive more benefits than the upper body.

When you stand on the Power Plate ®, each muscle in your body begins to make adjustments by expanding and contracting reflexively. Just like when your leg automatically jerks after being tapped with a reflex hammer, your muscles react automatically to the Power Plate’s vibrations,anywhere from 25 to 50 times per second.

Stimulating your muscles and nerves this way results in more work being done by your body in a shorter period of time, with far greater recruitment of your muscle fibers.
